Day 13 – Let’s Get to Work (Day 11 & 12 – Weekend)
By Mike Mindel | August 14, 2007
This content is summarised from the Day 13 – Let’s Get to Work training for the Thirty Day Challenge.
Pdf version of the presentation is available from here.
A Day In The Life
All that hard work we did last week in market research is going to pay off this week.
All those notes you’ve got have just saved you an enormous amount of time.
Great Content is King
Not rubbish content. Great content.
There’s a really easy way to ask yourself whether you’ve given content or not. Will the person who has arrived at my page and looked at my content:
- Be happier than when they arrived?
- Get what they expected to see?
As long as you follow that criteria, then that is marketing the way the internet works.
Don’t use diversion skills and tricks. There’s just no need for it.
Why not just give people exactly the information they are after. Having good content is a key part of that.
Putting Your Keyword to Work
Create three mini articles for each keyword. That’s a couple of paragraphs each.
This is basically what I (Ed) do. I get the inspiration from Golden Nuggets – via Bloglines
Here’s an example using ‘Speed Reading’

See the 21 new articles on ‘Speed Reading’ and 10 new blog posts.
I hope you took the initiative and expanded out this – there are so many other places to look for content related to your keyword e.g. Technorati.

See the little orange RSS button?

Just click on it to take the feed into Bloglines like we showed you in the last lesson.
You can use this technique for finding feeds all over!
Don’t Miss the Hotkeys
Don’t miss the hotkeys in Bloglines.

So much time can be saved with these hotkeys.
Rather than scrolling with the mouse use j for the next article or k for the previous article. It works so much better.
Toggle to keep a post new with n so you don’t lose it. But hopefully you’re using Google notebook to track.
Google Results
Lets look for inspiration.
I’m going to show you one example and then you need to go with your own keywords and come up with three.
Over to ‘Speed Reading’ in Google news

Can you get three articles from one example? Absolutely. Very easily. There’s no real rule to it. It’s more inspiration.
You just need to get into the habit of creating content. Creating content is the heavy lifting of internet marketing.
It’s not exactly hard work and after a while it becomes very easy.
As you get bigger and money under your belt, you will outsource this task. Pay others to do it.
But when we’re just starting out it’s good for you. So you know how to direct the people you outsource the work to.
The first item that really tickled my fancy is this one in Scientific American

If it’s in Scientific American then it has credibility.
You’ll Need A Word Processor
Take a look at Google Docs & Spreadsheets

You can have your own Word processing document or Spreadsheet online and open it up on any browser anywhere in the world.
Just open up a new document

and you’re away.
The most useful advantage to using Google Docs is you can share with other members of your team.
Very powerful.
Noting the Scientific American Article
This is the paragraph I put into Google Notebook. Just highlight the text you want to copy, right click and then select ‘Note this (Google Notebook)’.

Now it’s in Google Notebook

This article led me to another article on ‘Phonics Could Precent Dyslexia’

Export From Google Notebook to Google Docs
So now I’ve got lots of clippings in my notebook

and I click Tools -> Export to Google Docs

and there it is in Google Word

and here’s the article I’ve written

It didn’t take long. About 8 or 9 minutes to write.
We’re not here to win prizes for composition and grammar. We trying to get you into the habit of writing content on a daily basis.
I’ve highlighted a couple of things. Notice the keyword I was targeting is in the headline – the Pursuit of Free Speed Reading and the first paragraph.
I want to make it sound real & conversational.
Let’s face it. Who do you take notice of the most? Your best friend. There’s a certain casualness in the conversation which we like.
We’re taught to write formally at school which is such a shame.
The best writers write conversationally.
I’m not saying this is a particularly good example but this will do just fine.
Good Manners
At the bottom I put ‘here’s a link to the article’. You should always quote and link back to the original source of the article.
Especially if you use it in a blog.
It’s just good manners.
Todays Mission
- Write three short articles for each keyword.
- Use Google Docs/Word etc.
- Remember to put your keyword in the heading, first sentence.
- Keep it light!
- We’re not aiming for perfection. Just get it done.
- You should end up with six articles all in. (3 articles x 2 keyword niches).
- The downloadable PDF is here

This is a great summary. Lots of useful tips to get inspiration.
When I’m going to export to google docs, that option is not there when I click ‘tools’ in the notebook.
What can I do to get that option in there?
Thanks

Never mind. I got it there somehow. Notebook expanded full size by itself, then the option was available:)

Hi Mike, you know what? I love to come here more than anywhere else.

How do you link back to the source article from your own article. If that’s making sense to anyone.

Hi Mike,
I’m a slow learner so I’m still digesting day 13, but it has all been fascinating. Is there any way to make the Google Notebook work with aol? I can access the net with internet explorer, but over the years I have always used the aol browser, and find the internet explorer very awkward for me. Those notes popping up with no typing and images, too, really have me excited about research.
