Day 16 – Optional – How to Create Your Own Blog – Part II

By Mike Mindel | August 17, 2007

WARNING: This post is optional. The official Thirty Day Challenge blog for your posts is Tumblr. These three posts show you how to set up a WordPress blog on the Thirty Day Challenge for fun only. This part is entirely optional.

In this post I (Dan Raine) am going to show you how to make your very first post.

So go to your blog. In this case the url is http://blogs.thirtydaychallenge.com/web20poetry/.

and look for the ‘Site Admin’ down the right hand side

or login

Click on ‘Site Admin’ or ‘Login’ (whatever appears) and login to your blog

Here’s the dashboard. You should recognize it from the last post.

Remove the Hello World Post

Click on the ‘Manage Option’

You see the post with ‘Hello World’?

If you click ‘Delete’ it will remove the post.

But in this case I’ll click ‘Edit’ and edit the post.

Then click ‘Save’

Create a New Post

Click on ‘Write’ tab on the top

and you’ll see the standard Wordpress editing screen. So type in a title and some post content

You can write about your results, general interest, news.

Split Your Post into Separate Categories

You can actually split your posts into separate categories.

By default, you only have one category, uncategorized. Look on the right

Untick that and create a new category, say, ‘Latest News’.

This is useful because if people come to your blog and want to see posts about latest news or news about your challenge process, you can actually create different categories and they can look at just those posts which have been tagged with that category.

‘Latest News’ is ticked and ‘Uncategorized’ is unticked.

Now let’s highlight some text

and bold it

See how the < strong > tags appear either side. This is known as markup. You don’t need to worry too much about it as WordPress will markup text for you automatically as you just saw.

Add a Link

Say you want to link through to an affiliate program or a forum post. Highlight the word you want to link

add your own link text

and WordPress inserts it for you

Don’t worry about the code. If you’re not used to HTML it will make no sense to you.

But don’t worry about it too much.

Publish Your Post

Click ‘Publish’

Click on ‘View Post’ and there it is

We can go back to the Home page

and view them one on top of the other. Your new post is on top and the oldest are on the bottom.

Notice the link in the top post

which takes you to the Thirty Day Challenge.

Next up…. YouTube videos in your blog post.
