Day 16 - Part II - Let’s Get Ready to Tumblr

By Mike Mindel | August 17, 2007

This content has been summarised from Day 16 training - On Using Tumblr, presented by Rob Somerville.

A pdf version is available here. If you’re having trouble downloading pdf’s then install the free Adobe acrobat reader.

Hosting Platform - Tumblr

We’re choosing a hosting platform for your keyword optimized copy. This is the vehicle you will use to get ranking in Google and other search engines.

There are several choices for your hosting platform, but the platform we are going to use is Tumblr.

Tumblr is a very simple blog platform which is extremely easy to use and very effective.

Signup for Tumblr

Head on over to the Tumblr website.

This is the very simple home page of the site.

The whole model of Tumblr or Tumbleogs is that they are very easy to create and very fast to operate. They’re a great platform to use for the Thirty Day Challenge.

So click on ‘Start your own in 30 seconds’ and you’ll see

Put In Your Umbrella Phrase

Make sure you put in your umbrella phrase into Tumblr.

Then click Get started!

You’ll have to pop over to GMail to confirm your blog by the way.

How to Become a Wedding Planner

For the purposes of the rest of this tutorial we will pop back to Rob Somerville’s umbrella phrase: ‘how to become a wedding planner’.

Here it is listed in Google

on the first page, position 7, “phrase match” for that keyword.

I’m (Rob) also listed on the first page for the “broad match” as well.

It’s got 11,800 competing web pages

so it meets our criteria for the Thirty Day Challenge.

I (Rob) used Tumblr to create a web page with my keyword optimized copy.

The Goal

When you create your copy and you place it online so it can be spidered by the search engines is for the copy you create to be highly optimized in relation to the keyword.

The goal is for your keyword to be:

As you can see I’ve managed to achieve all three of those criteria. This is known as ‘on page’ optimization as the optimization takes place visibly on the web page.

There are other onpage optimization factors but those three are the most significant.

In relation to the other websites that are rnaking on the first page of Google for that keyword, my Tumblr blog has the greatest degree of optimization in relation to the keyword.

Some of the websites have the keywords in the title and the body copy but not fully in the url

Some don’t have it in the title at all, but only in the body copy

But I’m the only one who has the keyword throughout the Google listing.

So I have the best visible onpage optimization.

Let’s Look at the Tumblr Blog

You can see that it’s an extremely simple page.

A Title & Description

Two Posts

The first one is a starting post to get the blog started.

The second one goes into a bit more detail

Really, the reader is under no illusion when coming to the page what this blog is optimized for, and what this blog is about.

Which is exactly what we’re trying to achieve.

Where to Put the Keyword

The keyword is in the title of the blog

the title of the main post

the first paragraph of the main body copy.

It’s also bolded so the spiders can see that it is the most important keyword.

The keyword comes towards the end of the body copy

and this time it’s italicized to give it an extra bit of emphasis so the spiders have no illusion about what this page is optimized for.

The keyword is used again in the second blog post

which completes the relevance of this page in relation to the keyword.

What I like about Tumblr blogs is that they are very simple pages.

There is no distracting content other than the copy I want the reader to read and the links I want them to see.

The Affiliate Links

There are two links.

Here at the top

and here at the bottom of the page in the second post

Both of these links point to the money page which is the place I want to direct the traffic on to and there is an opportunity to convert the traffic into sales if the reader is interested in the product I am referring.

The Money Page

So this link

leads here

The Process Summary

So the rough goal here is to use Tumblr and other platforms to get ranking in the search engines for a keyword.

The traffic will come to your landing page, which in this case is a Tumblr blog.

You will then redirect that traffic on to a money page, which might be a sales letter for your product, or a sales letter to an affiliate product.

It might even be an Amazon or an Ebay listing.

But the money page is linked to from the landing page where your optimized copy and it’s the landing page from the search engines which is the page that gets ranked in the search engines.

Lets Log In

Lets log in to Tumblr.

(Note: I’ve switched back to my unusualproperties.tumblr.com page as I don’t have access to Rob’s account)

There are various options.

Settings

When you first enter Tumblr it’s a good idea to head straight for the settings tab.

This information won’t have been added to the blog during the sign up process.

Make sure you enter the title - take your ‘umbrella phrase’. That is what you want to get ranked for in Google and other search engines.

I recommend adding a sub-description

If you decide later on you need to change that ‘umbrella phrase’ for any reason you can change that here.

On some of the blog templates you can see a profile picture, depending on which template you choose. If you choose to use that template then you can add photo here.

This can be a picture of you or the affiliate product you’re promotion, or whatever.

Each Blog Needs a Unique Email Address

Each blog has to have a unique email address associated with it

So every time you set up a new one you need a unique email address. You can’t set up two blogs on the same email address.

What I generally tend to do is to set up a GMail address for my umbrella phrase or some derivative of that phrase if it’s already been taken.

You can get around this limitation by using the + character.

E.g. if you want to create a blog for ’scottish castles’ but you want to use the same unusualproperties@gmail.com email address then type this

That’s unusualproperties+scottishcastles@gmail.com. So the extra +scottishcastles was inserted after unusualproperties and before the @gmail.com.

When an email is sent to unusualproperties+scottishcastles@gmail.com then the email will still reach you at unusualproperties@gmail.com. />
Nifty, huh?

The Dashboard Tab

In the dashboard tab you can add the blog elements you want to add. E.g. a text post, a photo, a link, some video.

The Feeds Tab

If you want to add copy from another RSS feed then select the feeds tab.

You can add another blog or a Google news feed.

Tumblr Themes

There are a limited number of themes (templates) in Tumblr

But this is still elegant. The whole beauty of Tumblr is its simplicity. The templates are attractive in and of themselves and don’t detract from the content of the blog.

Some are single column templates and a double column template.

You can also change some of the colors if necessary.

Advanced Options

There are also some advanced options at the bottom of the settings

Here you can change the number of posts you show on the main page. Also whether you want to open links in a new window (advisable).

Every time you post you can ping the Blogosphere (advisable) and be promoted in the Tumblr directory (advisable).

Make sure you click on save settings.

Tumblr Goodies

The Goodies tab allows you to take advantage of some of the added value features that exist for Tumblr.

You can drag the Share button to your bookmarks bar to make it easy to access your Tumblr bog after you created it.

and here it is added to my Firefox toolbar

You can also post to your blog from an email address or send a message/photo from your mobile phone

The copy will be automatically added to your blog.

If you are on a Mac and used to dashboard widgets then there is a nice Tumblet dashboard widget here

That’s Tumblr!

An excellent and very simple web 2.0 platform for hosting your keyword optimized copy and so far I’ve found it to be very effective for ranking keywords we’ve focused on in the Thirty Day Challenge. (Less than 30,000 competing pages and 80+ popularity).

Off Page Linking

Having said that with the right amount of off-page link building you can get a Tumblr blog to compete with more competitive pages.

But for the level of competition we’re suggesting you target in the Thirty Day Challenge, Tumblr is excellent!

Good luck in your Tumblr blog creation.

(Mike’s comment: - Nice video Rob. I love your super direct style)

    Thanks, again, Mike!

You do such a great “photocopy” recap…and then always add your little touches (and I look for them!)…the nice bonus additional info about how to use the same email addy on Tumblr, was spot on!

    Cheers!

    Nice recap!

Only one point — I think you got the syntax the wrong way around for your gmail address:

    If the destination is “unusualproperties@gmail.com”
then the syntax for the second address would be:
    “unusualproperties+scottishcastles@gmail.com”

Am I supposed to sign up for a new Tumblr account for each post? If I try to use the same email address it will default to the first one I made.
