Day 17 - Part II - Ezine Articles

By Mike Mindel | August 18, 2007

This content has been summarised from Rob Somerville’s Ezine Articles video for the Thirty Day Challenge.

This post is about using Ezine Articles to host your ‘umbrella phrase’ optimized copy to gain ranking in Google and other search engines.

Just like Tumblr, you can place your optimized content on Ezine Articles to help you get ranking in Google.

As an example we will use an article I (Rob Somerville) submitted for the ‘wedding plan project’ using the keyword ‘wedding plan checklist’

Like Tumblr, the listing has the keyword in the title, the body copy and the url (the file name that points to the article resource online).

EZine Articles

Ezine Articles is a place where article writers can write, host and post articles with the view that they will be picked up by other people on the internet who are looking for content in various subject areas.

People can take those articles as long as the bio box (explained in a bit) is preserved on that article.

Usually the bio box points to a website that the article writer is interested in promoting or even indeed the article writer’s website itself.

Very often it tends to be a website that promotes a product or service in relation to the subject matter of the article.

Other people, blog owners, or ezine newsletter owners are always looking for content.

So they come to sites like Ezine Articles to find content they can put on their blogs or newsletters.

The blog owners, ezine article owners get copy. The article writers get to promote something and have the links associated with their promotion distributed on the internet as the article is picked up and used on other websites.

Ezine Articles

EZine Articles is by far the big daddy of the internet article directory world.

There are other article websites or directories like GoArticles, ArticleCity and ISnare. But Ezine Articles is the choice of many.

Of late, particularly over the last couple of months, with various detuning of various websites, Ezine Articles has risen to the fore.

It’s a good platform if you wish to go down the article distribution route.

How Does it Work

Open up an account by clicking on the ‘Submit Articles’ link

and fill in the registration form

click on the ‘confirmation link’ in your email

and login

Ezine Articles Members Area

We’re in the Ezine Articles members area

Here’s an example supplied by Rob Somerville on his video

This account was specifically set up for the ‘wedding planning’ project.

As you can see there is one article that has been submitted previously (which you saw above in Google). This has been approved and is live.

Ezine Articles is a human moderated system, so when you first submit an article to Ezine Articles it does take up to 5- - 7 days to get approved and go live.

This can be seen as a disadvantage.

But on the upside when your articles does go live, Ezine Articles is such a powerful domain, your article is often listed quited quickly and get incoming links.

Submit an Article

Click on ’sub a new article’ in the top left hand corner.

You’ll see a big form you need to fill out

Select a category first. In this example we will use ‘Relationships: Marriage’

Edit in a Text Editor First

I usually edit in a text editor first and then cut and paste into Ezine Articles.

So here is an example off the top of my Text Edit text editor

There’s a title at the top, then the article copy, then a biobox which is a description of who the author is and where we put our links.

Example Bio(graphy) Box

Melinda Barton is an Internationally recognized wedding planer and author of the book ‘Wedding Planning Secrets’. She has given several TV and radio appearances and is passionate about helping everyone succeed in their desire to have the best wedding through simple and easy to use wedding plan secrets.

www.weddingplanningsecrets.com

Copy and Paste

Now you can copy and paste the bits you need and paste them into the form.

e.g.

Select the first paragraph for the summary

and paste it in

(Note: you need to take out the HTML code)

In the article body you can use html tags but you are not allowed to put links there.

So select the full article text

and paste it in

Since Wedding Budget is the keyword, then bold it in the main body copy.

The keyword is mentioned in the first paragraph but also scatted throughout the article.

Also italicize the last reference to the keyword just to give a bit of extra emphasis towards the end of the article.

We want Google to be under no illusions about which keyword this article is optimized for.

Add your bio to the bio box

Once you enter it in once, it will stay for all future articles.

Notice that the book has a link to the weddingplanningsecrets.com which is the sale page of the Wedding Planning book.

Submit Your Article

Agree to the terms of refrenece, perform a spell check whilst you preview the article

Ezine Articles hires the contractions but there are no misspellings.

If there’s no problems then either ‘Save As Draft’ or ‘Submit This Article’

The article will take 2-7 days to be reviewed.

Review Submission

Come back every now and again and check the status

Currently the status is ‘in review’ and ‘not live’. When it is approved it will look like this

Once Live

You can view the url given to the article so you can work out where to locate it on the internet. The url will include some folder information, the title of the article, and the EzineArticles.com domain.

You won’t know exactly what that is until the article is approved.

Then you can go to stage 3 which you will learn about in the next couple of days.

Just like a Tumblr blog, make sure the content is relevant and useful. Use the same keyword optimization techniques as described in Day - 16 - Lets Get Ready to Tumblr.

If you choose to write an article to act as the hosting platform for your ‘umbrella phrase’ then Ezine Articles is an extremely good choice.

Good luck with your article writing!

This seems easy enough, but I’m behind and cannot attempt it YET….but I am staying on target watching the videos, notetaking, and learning.

I don’t want to just put crud out there…enough internet crud exists…plus, that would not help my bottom line…a good article in my niche just might do well, a cruddy one just put out there to stay on track w/ the TDC might give me “fuzzy numbers”.

But isn’t there a caveat against affiliate links there?

So doesn’t that eliminate them for our “testing” phase?

finally did publish some articles. one did say i used my keyword too much and made me go back and undo it all..but i still had it in the title and bottom sentence…maybe once in the body. the others took it as is, with keyword in body throughout.
