Day 9 – Google Trends Redux

By Mike Mindel | August 9, 2007

The Real Purpose of Today

The real purpose of today is to give you the reasons why we’ve been doing all this phrase research and coming up with the numbers. To give you a framework so it makes much more sense to you.

Ignore the Unique Pages!

The very first thing I need to tell you is that the video you saw was created by Rob for Immediate Edge a few months ago. The Immediate Edge is really about taking people from the minor league to the big leagues to continue the baseball metaphor.

But the Thirty Day Challenge is about first learning to swing the bat. So it may have freaked out some people. For example one of the things we showed you which was interesting to us as propellerhead geek types is the fact that Google only lists about 700 sites. This was taken to mean far more than it actually did.

We apologise for that.

So. For now. It’s just an interesting phenomena. Nothing more.

Even though Google says it indexes hundreds of thousands and millions of pages it will only list about 700 on any given topic.

Now forget about it.

Ignore it.

Issues From Day 8

We talked about finding keywords that will deliver approximately 80-100 visitors a day using Google Trends. There are two reasons why I think early adopters may have stuffed up and jetisoned words which were good.

Male Yeast Infection Comes First

You have to make sure you use ‘male yeast infection’ in the first part of the phrase.

Yeast comes first. If you do it the other way around then you won’t get enough data. Also notice that ‘male yeast infection’ is entered as a broad match and your niche is entered with quotes.

Many Of Your Niches Won’t Show On The Top

Niches that we attack often won’t show on the top chart.

This is a good thing. Then we won’t really be competing with anyone. We’ll be sneaking under the radar so to speak.

A lot of the time the keywords won’t show on the graph. What you need to do is look down in the English language section. You’ll see the yeast infection in blue. You have to compare that data to the little red chunk. Ideally you want the red to be 1/5th or 1/6th the length.

The reason is that we’re limiting the competition to 30,000 pages in Google most of the keywords. So if you see a graph like this in the English Languages section (bottom right)

then this is good!

If you remember that the blue line is about 500 – 550 searches a day and the red line in this case is about 1/5th then that is 100 searches a day. Which is what we want.

So I’m going to repeat it again. The ‘male yeast infection’ is there as a baseline. Most of your niches will not show up in the top graph. That is OK. They will register in the English Languages section. So you want those instances where the red line is 1/5th of the blue line. Like this

That means you will get about 80-100 searches a day for your exact phrase. Which is what you want.

Ok. Now breath a sigh of relief.

Is The English Part Generated In Real Time?

Aren’t so many people typing in ‘male yeast infection’ that it’s affecting the chart? Yes. You’ll see the upswing since we mentioned it. Pharmaceutical companies everywhere are now basing their projections on the basis we are all searching for ‘male yeast infection’.

Based on our testing, that chart is an average. When you have a question mark over anything always default on the side of bad numbers. If that was a live chart (which you never know – we have to work it out by research and testing) then the numbers would look a lot better for a lot of keywords. You would only need a little red bar one tenth the size of the blue bar not one fifth.

But I’m going to assume it is indeed an average and ‘male yeast infection’ has been pretty steady over a period of time prior to us smacking ‘male yeast infection’ about in the Thirty Day Challenge.

So always use bad numbers. Lets always be pleasantly surprised as opposed to horribly disappointed.

Male Yeast Infection Keyword

For those of you who are more experienced and may already own a page in the number one position for a Google phrase. Please use that data instead of ‘male yeast infection’. It will be more current and you won’t have the Thirty Day Challenge effect. So keep that in mind.

Over time you’ll all be number one for you position as you learn what we’re going to do.

The Garrett Toolbar

Garrett Valdivia has released a toolbar which will create a splitscreen which will perform both the Google Search and the Google Trends search for you simultaneously.

You can find the blog post here.

First watch the video here and then click here to install the search plug in.

In a nutshell the above link takes you to this page here

Click on the drop down where you previously installed the Wordtracker free keyword tool search bar

Select Add ‘TDC Comp and Trend’

The toolbar gets added

Enter your search term e.g. ‘how to build a deck’

and you get a split screen. On the left is the exact phrase Google search. On the right is the Google trends search. Notice that ‘male yeast infection’ is filled in for you and your keyword is added to the right.

Pretty nifty.

You get it all on a single page! A great time saver.

What Do These Numbers Mean

The magic number in Internet Marketing is 200.

Why?

When we’re building a site, a product, or an affiliate for someone elses product. I make an assumption when I look at the market. The assumption I make is that the sales letter and the conversion process is really, really bad. It’s so bad that only 1 in 200 will look at the offer and buy it.

You may think this is awful but I’ve (Ed) made a fortune on those numbers.

A much better copywriter will get 1 in 100 or 1 in 50.

We are here to deal with bad numbers. That’s what its all about.

If we can get a keyword that is delivering 50, 60, 70 people a day then we’ll be at the point where it will take 4 days to make 1 sale.

If you’re promoting an affiliate product then you’ve just won the challenge.

We are trying to find a keyword or keywords that will deliver us those 200 unique visitors. We’re only focusing on one keyword at the moment or two if you’re feeling up to it.

That’s why we look at the keywords with such detail.

Before – you had to close your eyes and hope that you will get some traffic. Now you do know which is amazing.

At the end of the day I hope that you get 200 unique visitors to your money page (explained later) per day (and make a sale per day).

Try To Go For Two Markets

Now you’ve gone through all your keywords then you have a choice:

We’re going to try for two markets. We’re going to have to learn and educate ourselves with the marketplaces. Take into account the competition, whether there are affiliate programs.

Narrow down your seven to two.

Time For Redux

I’m going to highlight a few key points to really ram home this whole process. Much of below is a repeat of the podcast in Ed’s car. But read it again so it sinks in.

Let’s look up ‘free speed reading’ in Google Trends again

Make sure that ‘male yeast infection’ is first without quotes and ‘free speed reading’ is second. If it’s the other way round then you’ll see this

This is bad.

So make sure the keywords are in the right order.

In all likelihood you won’t see much in the way of data in the top chart. The blue line is for ‘male yeast infection’ whilst the red line will be for your chosen keyword.

The reason is that keywords with number of competing web pages of 30,000 or less rarely have enough traffic to get into the chart.

Where You Need To Look

This is where people have really missed the boat. You must look in the bottom right corner in the Languages section.

These are the two lines you need to compare. For many months the blue line represented 500 searches a day. It’s only increased because of the amount of traffic from people looking at that keyword during the Thirty Day Challenge. (Ed Dale’s belief is that it is an average).

I encourage you to use your own keywords for which you know the traffic. If you do so it will make the whole process work a lot better.

If you have a number 1 keyword somewhere and you know exactly how much traffic it generates then you can substitue your own keyword as a baseline instead of ‘male yeast infection’.

This is where the rubber hits the road.

You Want 80-100+ Searches Per Day

In this case the red line is about 1/7th of the blue line. So if you calculate (1 / 7) * 500 then that’s about 62 visitors per day for the number one spot.

This is good to know.

The Key Number is 200

Our key number is 200. This 200 figure is how many people we need to come to our site (or an affiliate site) before one of them will buy. It’s a disgraceful number. But I (Ed) made a fortune out of this number for years and years.

Don’t be optimistic and disappointed. Be conservative and have a pleasant surprise.

If you divide 200 by 62 then that will take about 3 days to make one sale. If that’s a 30 dollar affiliate product and you make 50% then thats $15 and you’ve just won the challenge.

You need to find enough keywords (1, 2, 3, … 4) that will add up to give you enough traffic. In the big leagues we get all the keywords related to ‘free speed reading’ and use the process we’re going to show you with variations on it. You’ll be able to do it with one or two keywords.

That’s why we are asking you to narrow down to two keywords in two different niche markets .

Over the course of day 9 and day 10 we will do our final refinement.

But focus for the moment on this process because this is where it all happens.

    Hi Mike,

Just wanted to say thanks for taking all this stuff and breaking it down for us everyday. Very nice!

Although I’m a visual person and I really like the videos, seeing it in writing adds that much more impact for me. And I suspect, for A LOT of others as well.

Hi Mike, loving the GTrends tool, its fantastic.
Q: Is there anyway to stop it expiring so soon. I’m clicking the middle button of my mouse to really drill down into 20-30 or so phrases and I often get the “session expired” message and I have to refresh the main page and start again.
    Cheers

P.S can I access the GTrends tool from my WT account, would that sort the issue?
