Day 24 Diary – How to Write a Story – Niche Update
By Mike Mindel | August 26, 2007
I’ve got content up on three content platforms now. There are plenty of content platforms to choose from but I suspect, like me, people will gravitate to those with the highest perceived ranking power.
Niche Cluster: How to Write a Story
Please click on each of the blue links to show content from each platform. Please note that all content is original across all three platforms.
WordPress
How to Write a Story on WordPress.

Note: I used ‘how to write a story’ in several titles for my blog. But not every single one. It just gets annoying after a while.
Blogger

HubPages

My Affiliate Links
Here’s my discrete link on the right hand side of my WordPress blog.

I believe this is still within the free WordPress terms and conditions. Please see ‘Be Careful With Free WordPress and Affiliate Links‘ for more.
Here’s a slightly more aggressive affiliate link for Blogger (BlogSpot)

and a simple text link for HubPages

Ranking
And we’re off.
T + 2 Hours
I get ranked for exact match at 126 in Google, rises to 118.

In comes my BlogSpot blog, four spots below

T + 8 Hours
Ranked second for ‘How to Write a Good Opening Story’

and first for ‘How to Write a Powerful Story’

I’m 68th for ‘How to Write a Short Story’ exact match

T + 11 Hours
WordPress stats (I suspect their accuracy) after 11 hours

Quality Content Post + (T+ 11 Hours 10 Minutes)
I needed to get this quality content post out but am aware that it will have a significant effect on the results. Can’t do anything about it I’m afraid. This post will skew the stats moving forward. Please bear this in mind.
Referrers get hit first

Search terms trickle in

T + 1 Day
Ranked 32 for exact match

Delicious comes in at 27 for exact match

Digg arrives on page one for exact match after one day

Front page of delicious popular after a little social loving. I put in ‘How to Write a Powerful Story’ but I think I should have used ‘How to Write a Story’ like Digg & Netscape.

Referrers

T + 2 Days
Google keyword searches

Blog stats

T + 3 Days
I’m at rank 16 on page 2

Referrers are dying down

Google searches are building up to 10 a day

StatCounter stats report more though (for WordPress blog only)

T + 5 Days
Today 26th August 2007 (T + 5 Days)
My digg and netscape are on page 1.

But sadly my content disappeared from Google, then reappeared at position 112. Ouch.

I suspect that by making my niche public, something happened and I got penalized for it. My broad matches are also nowhere.
I also noticed some people have ripped off my content and submitted to article sites so that may have affected my ranking. Here’s an interesting post from the forums entitled ‘The Illustrated Guide to Duplicate Content in the Search Engines‘ for those concerned with duplicate content issues.
Affiliate Statistics
I started the TDC Stats Tracker last night. After 12 Hrs I see

I’m getting some traffic from HubPages now

which is helping my affiliate click through rate. In fact my New Novelist affiliate link reports 18 clicks so things are moving.

Not All Traffic Needs to Come From Google
You can get quality targeted traffic direct from HubPages, Squidoo, YouTube among many! Google is just one targeted traffic source. You don’t have to rely on it.
Ok. Thats it for the moment. I’m waiting for the magic 200 and my 1 in 200 affiliate sale.

Great log Mike. I’m sorry to see that the ranking has fluctuated so much.
On one niche I have been consistently ranked on the front page (I nearly own it… 8/10 positions are mine)since I started while, my other niche, like the one you made public, is struggling to get anything in the top 10 pages (save an ezine article on page two).
No conversions yet for me. Be slippery AND discreet… not the simplest proposition.
I got “Made to Stick” yesterday, and can verify that it is awesome. And I’ve only read the first 25 pages.

Mike,
just want to say thanks for putting yourself out there like this, and showing everybody all of your steps AND RESULTS.
It is certainly not the norm of anyone so established in the internet world, and takes some courage.
Much respect.

Thank you for the great info about WP! I of course had not read the T&Cs, so I appreciate the Cliff Notes version.

Mike Mindel,
I agree… with Bart it is certainly not the norm for someone established in the Internet Marketing world to show everybody all of their own steps AND give detailed RESULT EXAMPLES for training purpose.
“Thank YOU”!

Mike
I used exactly the same procedure as you did on wordpress even down to the same theme with a discrete link to my clickbank affiliate in top right.
I got barred within one day and the same happened to my other wordpress sites.
Here is the termthey are relating it to
“the Content is not spam, and does not contain unethical or unwanted commercial content designed to drive traffic to third party sites or boost the search engine rankings of third party sites, or to further unlawful acts (such as phishing) or mislead recipients as to the source of the material (such as spoofing);”

[...] What a shock it was to read Mike Mindel’s Blog this morning! There was some outstanding content. He laid out a complete overview of his niche and all of his content. It is phenomenal. I couldn’t have done a better job myself so I won’t!I subscribe to the “work smart, not hard” school of internet marketing. Therefore I will not duplicate Mike’s efforts however, we’ll use his example and critique it. [...]
