Day 7 Diary - It’s Judgment Time - Part 1

By Mike Mindel | August 8, 2007

As Ed says in Day 7:

Now you’ve had a day to let it all percolate, are there one or two there that jump out of you, have a bit more legs, action, activity even without me having to tell you any raw numbers?

So which of my seven niches stand out to me?

Writing the Suspense Novel

Well I’m quite into ‘writing the suspense novel’. My friend Benet Simon

Benet Being Cute

& I have been working on numerous writing projects for the past fifteen years and our favorite genre is thrillers.

Boy do we love ‘em. Here are some of my favorites:

We eat em up.

So I have a natural affinity with this project.

Market Research

There’s 160 searches a day, some competition, affiliate programs around horror and suspense audio books. There’s some suspense novel affiliates & ebook publishing affiliates. But again no Google Trends for ’suspense thriller’, ‘psychological thriller’. The niche ‘write a novel’ shows a curious decline and then levels off.

But in my gut I like it.

Mentalism Tricks

The other niche that jumps out of me is pub mentalism for beginners. I just love Derren Brown. In particular this episode of the Trick or Treat TV series - where Derren forced a woman to ’see herself dead’ in a car crash. (She had agreed to sign up for the trick or treat and signed a contract).

Julie Simm, 29, was taken to a mocked-up crash scene after being hypnotised by Brown for his new C4 series.

Ambulance men removed a ‘body’ from the car as she was wandering around the wreckage.

Programme-makers say Ms Simm had admitted to rarely wearing a seatbelt, and that the stunt was for her benefit.

Sidetrack Alert!

Ok. If you really want to get why I love Derren Brown so much then watch these three videos.

Warning: These videos may freak you out. I make no apologies for my warped sense of humour. But some of you will at least understand my fascination with psychology & mentalism.

If you have a delicate sensibility then don’t watch ‘em. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The Car Crash Stunt

The Zombie Shootout

And now a more down to earth example:

How Predictable is Steve Merchant?

Ok. The sidetrack is over.

Market Research

From the market research the keyword ‘mentalism tricks’ has got 48 searches a day (though I suspect the market might use a different keyword) and there is some competition.

People are selling real stuff to real people. There’s lots of affiliate programs. But hardly any search volume on Google Trends.

Exact Phrase Competition Search

Now let’s go to Google and get our exact phrase competition results for each of our niches. I’ll just show a couple of examples here:

Mentalism Tricks

The first one is ‘free mentalism tricks’.

Gives me

just 27 competing web pages for the exact match search “free mentalism tricks”. Thats quite a low popularity and competition.

I’m starting to wonder if I’ve chosen the right keyword for my niche. A keyword that my niche market will use when searching for mentalism tricks.

So 33 searches per day & 27 competing web pages.

Suspense Novel

Now on to suspense novel. In Wordtracker we get

In Google we see

That’s 191,000 competing web pages. No good. Back to Wordtracker.

Lets try the next one down, ’suspense novel writer’

That’s 30 competing web pages. Not quite within the 25,000 - 30,000 competing web pages suggested by the Thirty Day Challenge.

So 24 searches a day and 30 competing web pages in Google.

It’s only 24 searches (so not within the suggested 80-100 daily searches) and below the suggested sweet spot of 25,000 - 30,000 competing web pages.

Not great. Not terrible.

See the ‘Market Research’ tab on my spreadsheet for the rest.

    Hi Mike,
First of all keep up the good work!
But a couple of points. The competing pages in Google should be less than 30,000.
I understood it that your umbrella keyword (”free mentalism tricks”) had to be greater than 80, but I see you are using the niche keyword (”mentalism tricks”), can somebody clarify this.

As an aside you might find this useful:
    labs.google.com/sets?hl=en&q1=mentalism&q2=&q3=&q4=&q5=&btn=Large+Set

Also I’ve only heard the word “mentalism” in the past few years when it has become popular.

I started with mentalism tricks but Wordtracker returned only three keywords with ‘free mentalism trick’ as the first keyword.

    So I started with that.

Useful link to the labs by the way. Thanks.

None of you commented on Derren Brown’s escapades. What do you reckon?

    Freaky or what?

Omigod, I cried watching that girl see herself die. I’m into paranormal stuff but those kinds of tricks just blow my mind.
