Day 8 Diary – Let the Judgment Continue
By Mike Mindel | August 9, 2007
Ok. I’ve had a stiff drink after typing up all of day 8’s notes. Advocat if you must know. With an ice cube. Delicious.
Right. Back to work.
I’ve Re-jigged My Spreadsheet
First of all I’m going to slightly rejig my spreadsheet. I’ve come to some strong conclusions on the whole niche market / niche clarification. But I’ll finish off that discussion in another blog post.
For the moment I’m going to move my niche market, solve a problem and sub-niche columns into my original ‘Niche Markets’ spreadsheet – which I have now renamed ‘Niches’.

Reason being that the concept of a Niche Market was extremely helpful in clarifying the market I wanted to sell to. But the output you need are niches (or sub-niches) to plug into Wordtracker & test for market demand.
More about this in another blog post.
Some Google Trends
In my last diary post I was looking at two niches:
- Mentalism tricks with 33 searches per day & 27 competing web pages
- Suspense novel with 24 searches per day & 30 competing web pages.
Why do I have this sinking feeling?
Over to Google Trends then
Mentalism Tricks

Oh dear. No traffic. Or at least below 250 searches per day. Lets look at the Languages for comparative purposes

Uh-oh. That’s like 10 searches a day.
This niche is blown out of the water.
It’s over for ‘mentalism tricks’. I bet I got the niche umbrella phrase wrong. Might go back and investigate again.
Suspense Novel
Google trends shows

and again

Aargh. Killed again.
‘Suspense novel’ is over. Nothing for ’suspense novel writer’ either.
Drat.
I’m just going to check if ANY of my other niche umbrella keywords are happy in Google Trends.
The Results
I got killed on all my niches except for one:
- International rollercoaster reviews with ‘umbrella keyword: nothing’.
- Pub mentalism for beginners with umbrella keyword: ‘free mentalism tricks’.
- Eating healthy snacks: with umbrella keyword: ‘healthy food snacks’.
- Juicing for health: with umbrella keyword: ‘juicing for health’ .
- Making money in online games with umbrella keyword: ‘making money playing free online games’.
- Buying unusual property: with umbrella keyword: ‘unusual properties for sale’.
An Unusual Observation
In the niche ‘unusual properties for sale’ there was no traffic in the top graph. But look at the regions

It looks like the United Kingdom has more of an interest in unusual properties than Canada and the United States. Maybe it’s just an English thing. But it’s curious.
If the UK is say a 1/10th of the 500 searches a day from ‘male yeast infections’. Then thats still 50 searches a day. But the red line is twice the length. So this may well bring in 100 searches a day and may yet be a viable niche.
Very interesting. I’ll keep it in mind.
Summary
I’ve been nuked. All my niches failed to promise any traffic except for one.
Am I sad?
Hell no.
I just saved myself wasting a ton of time and work.
And yes. Mr. fancy keyword specialist Wordtracker dude Mike Mindel did not secure himself any niches first time round.
I’m going to go away and think about this.
Spreadsheet available at the usual location.
Back soon.

I might call these trend slapping.
I thought there was traffic there and the competition looked great but in the end my niche was trend slapped.

Hah. Nice. I’m worn out – I’ve been trend slapped all day.
August 9th, 2007 at 2:17 am
LOL @ Patrick!!! :p
Thanks for showing us your human side…because it is encouraging that everyone “tries stuff” and even those who know more than some get “slapped.”
But, like you stated, I don’t feel discouraged, but see the glass half full with “wow, did I ever save myself a lot of time, effort, and money!”
Cheers! (with a straw)

Haha, I have the opposite problem. I can find ones that match the Day 7/8 criteria, but they’re not so great at the criteria for Days 1-6.
Here’s a few from today’s “Google Hot Trends” that fit the days 7 and 8 criteria.
- “walk the line lyrics” 500+ searches/day, 21,400 results
- “friends in low places lyrics” ~165 searches, 570 results
- “magic carpet ride lyrics” ~260 searches/day 759 results
- dont date him girl. com ~210 searches/day 37,900 results
- “leonid stadnyk” ~50 searches/day 635 results
Good luck with those. I sure don’t know what to do with them.

Uh, I didn’t intend for “dont date him girl dot com” to show up as a link. I have no affiliation or interest in that site.

Hello Mr. fancy keyword specialist Wordtracker dude Mike Mindel
This is excellent – as in your attitude to your results – that’s exactly it – you’ve saved yourself time – great point!

Thanks for your excellent summaries and examples, Mike, they illuminate the training brilliantly!

[...] (If you haven’t read The Dip, you should. It’s really short; you can probably read it standing in the bookstore if you feel like it.)The specific Dip I seem to have hit is that none of my keywords passed the Google Trends test. And so far all the ones I can find that pass the Day 7 and 8 tests fail the Days 1-6 tests (ie. they aren’t commercially viable). Mike Mindel’s having the same problem, but that’s a pretty small comfort. [...]

I feel better knowing that I am not the only one not getting it right the first time. I have been trend slapped more times than I care to remember. But although it sets me back with keeping up with the challenge and the next step in the process.I am having fun…hmmm having fun getting slapped…what am I thinking.
Cheers!!

Mike. Tried to access the link to your spreadsheet but got a message that I didn’t have permission. I accessed it yesterday with no problem.
August 9th, 2007 at 10:13 am
I double checked it just now & it seems ok. Please confirm.

Thanks again Mike for this great post and summaries. One thing though; I could not view the spreadsheet from the link above — no permission granted!
Fix it?
Best

I think I’m missing something fundamental here – maybe you can help me correct my misunderstanding.
You say “Mentalism tricks with 33 searches per day & 27 competing web pages”. However when I search ‘mentalism tricks’ I see 382,000 pages in Google.
Sorry to be dense, but what am I misunderstanding.
