Tip #15 - Don’t Lose Sight of the Goal

By Mike Mindel | August 18, 2007

Mike Mosby wrote an excellent blog post yesterday (Friday) in which he said

It is very exciting watching your site move up the rank ladder but don’t forget what you are trying to accomplish.

We should be trying to identify what sort of traffic does a site in this niche at the number 1 or 2 ranking provide?

What products are people looking for?

What products are currently available?

Can I produce/provide/find a better product to fit their needs?

Mike is absolutely right.

We’ve got a niche keyword that GTrends tells us will get traffic.

We’ve put up some quality content (haven’t we…) to see if we will actually get that traffic when Google ranks us.

We’ve researched some affiliate programs and linked to them in our quality content in an unobtrusive way.

Why are we doing all this?

To see if our niche will get traffic and the visitors will convert to paying customers.

It’s Like a Tracer Bullet

A tracer bullet is a special bullet that is modified to accept a small pyrotechnic charge in their base.

When you fire the bullet, you’ve got streaks of light showing you the path to the target right next to the live ammunition.

The path of the bullet is visible to the naked eye.

This enables the shooter to follow the bullet’s path relative to the target in order to make corrections to his aim.

That’s what we’re trying to do.

Fire a bullet, follow it’s trajectory (niche -> traffic -> conversion) so that we can decide if it’s the right target niche for us.

If it isn’t, then we’ll correct our aim, and target another niche.

Don’t Lose Sight of the Goal

Don’t lose sight of the goal my friends.

To see if our niche will get traffic and the visitors will convert to paying customers.

-Mike

Yes, I just checked Google Analytics for the first time which was fun and a big reality check.
Great rankings on Google, indeed, but less than 5 unique visits and that was probably my teammates. lol

I agree that we are cutting our teeth on these methods, and needn’t be too concerned that one platform shook off a lot of people using Web 2.0–if they all shake us off, it is a problem–but for now, it’s just Tumblr, and there will be other options.

Also, think of how you might apply what you’ve seen here to your own blog or website. How has this process to date effected your view of how you could do business differently? Can you apply what you’ve learned and enhance your business?

As the saying goes, “the map is not the terrain”–it shows us where the hills and rivers are, but we still have forge the path, one step at a time and we are just learning the steps.

We need to remember to take what we learn, apply it to what comes our way, twisting and bending in the breeze, moving with the dynamic changes around us, not snapping beneath the weight of inertia.

    Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

As far as tumblr — so be it. As I mentioned on 30day main blog, it was great experience. This instruction from both you, Mike and the TDC crew is priceless. Someone needs to place it all in ebook or PDF File after its said and done — no telling where that idea might go … Ed or Dan, any takers?

yes…i put the counter i always go with: statcounter.com (I like them, plus they even have invisible counters)….but it sounds like Ed and team are coming up with something else cool to trace traffic.

never heard of the tracer bullet…read Mike’s blog and learn sumthin’ new every day :p

I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. last night and the night before. I finally got my blog up (I couldn’t use tumblr, it was already used, I used blogspot.com)
Yesterday morning when I checked I was in the Number 7 position woohoo, however then a few minutes later when I wanted to show my 18 year old daughter (who by the way could have cared less) it was gone, vanished how freakin disappointing. It has since reappeared and is in number 10 if I use quotes or number 12(second page without quotes). Not bad, I’m pretty impressed, now to work on getting it moved up!! Thanks guys
