Tip #7 - Wordtracker GTrends - Lessons Learned
By Mike Mindel | August 14, 2007
Judging by all the fantastic comments everyone seems pretty pleased with GTrends - the tool.
That’s great! Thanks for those comments. We really appreciate it.
Now there’s no excuse for falling behind or failing to spot a niche.
Marketing the Way the Internet Works
But lets look at the lesson in what just happened.
Think about what Ed said in Day 13.
Will the person who has arrived at the tool - GTrends:
- Be happier than when they arrived?
- Get what they expected to see?
I think the answer is yes in both cases.
Are you happier? Sure. It’s made your life a whole much easier. It’s saved time.
Did you get what you expected to see? Yes. You expected a Wordtracker - Google Trends mashup and that’s what you got.
Is This Marketing?
I read an excellent quote recently from the American Marketing Association.
Marketing is a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to your customers and for managing customer relationships.
Anyone not “creating, communicating and delivering value to customers” can not be considered a marketer.
I watched the forums, saw the demand and frustration when finding niches for the Thirty Day Challenge.
Then I created some value in the form of saving time.
I communicated the value in this blog post using a tutorial.
Finally GTrends delivered value when some of you started finding some niches that satisfied the filters in the Thirty Day Challenge. E.g. ’sailor moon games’.
Notice that I didn’t do anything super fancy with the tool. I created one big value for the market.
Saving time with the GTrends process.
But first I waited for the demand to stabilise. Some fledgling tools got off the ground as people attempted to satisfy the market need.
There was already competition. That’s fine!
The name GTrends stabilised from the marketplace both on the forums and Ed’s earlier Day 10 Training.
So GTrends - the tool is market driven not product driven. Geddit?
Improving GTrends
How do you think I will improve GTrends. Will I soldier ahead, adding this feature and that feature?
Hell no!
Do you see all the suggestions in the blog comments?
I asked you guys, the market, what you want.
Now I’ll sit back and let you tell me.
Then I’ll do another round of fixes.
Do You Feel a Niche Coming On?
But hey. Isn’t GTrends (or it’s active form GTrending) a niche too?
Let’s break it down:
- Niche: Internet Marketing
- Market: People who want to make their first $10 online
- Niche Market: Thirty Day Challengers (aahhh… click)
- Problem: How do we speed up the process of market research to find a suitable niche. It’s exhausting!
- Sub-Niche: GTrending.
I’m using this example to demonstrate a point. I’m not selling anything to you.
It seems obvious when you think about it.
GTrending, the activity, is a niche.
Niche Market: Thirty Day Challengers
In this example, you, the Thirty Day Challengers, are the niche market.
You’re in a niche ‘internet marketing’.
You’re a market who wants to make their first $10 online.
That brings up certain needs (installing tools, simple explanations, need for automation).
I saw that niche market and satisfied those needs by creating, communicating and delivering value to you.
I do the same thing with the Daily Summaries (Ed’s videos in photo-book format) which gives you a good reason to come to my blog.
I do the same thing with my Thirty Day Diary as I show you ground-level experience with the Thirty Day Challenge on a daily basis.
Think On This
Do you see the power of satisfying a niche market?
Don’t you think it’s time to get to work and create some article content that will satisfy YOUR niche market?
Day 13 - Let’s Get to Work awaits.

Hi.
The GTrends is indeed a great tool!
HOWEVER,
As I posted on the 30 days challenge, I think I might have found a small bug.
For one of my phrases, the google competition number was wrong. And when I actually did the exact match search myself, the real result was much lower.
Thought you should know.
Thanks.

Mike, once again you have exceeded yourself!

Mike, man what is your IQ? 180?
Kiddin’
I learned a lot of stuff from your blog as I learned from Ed Dale. Damn, you both can be a killer combination.

Mike, I can’t publish publicly a phrase I’m considering to use for my niche.
Can you please contact me via email, and I’ll send you the phrase. I’ll have to trust you for the common good of everyone

G’day Mike,
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your blog mate. I’m afraid I’m not too much into the audio/visual stuff and very much enjoy reading your summaries and comments. Makes everything “sink in” much better.
Cheers,

Very useful summary Mike. And I like how you used the example of “gtrending” to illustrate niche/market etc. Brilliant.

[…] In addition to the Golden Nuggets, Mike Mindel, a co-founder of Wordtracker, delivered a pleasant surprise. Mike created a mashup of Wordtracker and Google Trends known as GTrends to help 30 Day Challengers research their niches. The tool is a great timesaver and reduces the frustration of trying to manage multiple windows and tasks to pin down appropriate keyword or umbrella phrases. As Mike explains on his blog, he updated Wordtracker to fill the market need of a group of similarly situated individuals. He notes that GTrends is essentially a niche, in and of itself. […]

Hi Mike -
I find that when I get to the Gtrends page I am unable to pull up the Captcha image. This occurred midstream yesterday when I was drilling down on some keywords. I get the tiny little ‘thumbnail’ type square appear but no letters/numbers. If I right click on this - it disappears altogether. If I click on either the Captcha image link or the audio link I get the following message:
Server not found
Firefox can’t find the server at captchas.net.
* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of www.example.com
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
I can access the Captcha site in the normal way through the browser. I have put this up on the forum but no response after 60 views - so my guess is the problem is at my end. Can you offer any suggestions? Thanks Dale
