Tip #12 - IMPORTANT - It’s the Process NOT the Platform
By Mike Mindel | August 18, 2007
We need to stress that Tumblr is NOT the Holy Grail.
The previous tip what if your phrase is ‘Gone’ on Tumblr is meant to show you that if one url is taken - you don’t have to panic.
There are other options available.
In fact we recommend that if you see two people with a Tumblr blog then choose another platform.
It’s the Process NOT the Platform
Stop thinking about the various technologies and start thinking about the process.
Remember that internet marketing is a symphony of four parts
- Market research
- Traffic
- Conversion
- Product
Market research will change over time, as will getting traffic, conversion and product.
So please realise…
There is More Than One Content Platform on the Web
This is so important that I’m going to shout it again.
THERE IS MORE THAN ONE CONTENT PLATFORM ON THE WEB
Tumblr is not the only one. There are many others.
In fact the web is built on content and content platforms.
Make Your Content High Quality and Relevant
Whatever platform you choose you MUST make sure that the content is high quality, relevant and valuable to the reader.
Or else you will be just another spammer!
We do not like spammers.
We do not encourage spammers.
We do not encourage spamming.
(Feel free to quote me on that).
Why Tumblr
The Thirty Day Challenge team selected Tumblr because it was one web 2.0 platform that was easy to use.
It’s just one of many gorgeous friends who can help get you positive regard in Google.
It’s an example.
These web 2.0 content platforms allow people to participate in the internet without having their own domain name, or incurring costs of their hosting service.
This is particularly important for the Thirty Day Challenge - which aims to make its participants $10 in 30 days online for free.
So they can begin to build their fledgling web business into something more…
A List of Alternative Web 2.0 Platforms
So far you have been exposed to Tumblr and EZine Articles.
Here are some others:
Important Tips
- Do not put all your eggs into one content basket.
- It’s the process, not the platform. There are many blog/content services to choose from.
- Always, always provide relevant, quality content - so the reader has an enjoyable experience when visiting your site.
- Do not be a SPAMMER, providing irrelevant content. You will be found out and you will fail.
Thats all I have to say on this subject.
Onwards…
-Mike

Well said Mike. I have been looking at most of the tumblrs on digg etc. and the ones I have seen have been following the rules.
Let’s hope it stays that way or it just ruins this great thing for everyone.
Thanks for the heads up.

what do you mean by “Or set up your own WordPress blog on your own domain if you have one.”? How?
August 18th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
I’ve removed the line about setting up WordPress on your domain.
There is a reason why Ed and Dan taught the strategy of using Web 2.0 properties.
You are NOT going to get the same traction in the search engines using a fresh domain.

Love your new happy smiley “I’ve got the world on a string” picture, Mike!
It was just a slight disappointment to me that my site was taken down on Stumblr but no biggie…like you said: “it’s a process, we are learning technique” (I think you said that LOL)…that is what makes me happy: I did it. It worked. Now, I will apply it elsewhere and do it again.
I’m still having fun, more happy than fustrated, actually! My poor phrase of 40,000 pages or so (not great for TDC) did rank first page number 7 on Google and 9 for broad match. Not bad.
So, when I get time, I can’t wait to really work it nicely…now, I’m eeking out micro-seconds online here and there
Cheers!!

Thanks Kelly!
I believe attitude is everything & I wanted to convey that in my bio.

I hope you don’t mind me commenting on Kelly’s comment Mike. Glad to hear you went ok with yr 40,000 exact matches, Kelly. I chose a phrase which got the 2 ticks -was at 28,000 and today it’s at 37,000 only a day later. So I don’t know whether to move forward on it or not.
What could’ve happened here,Mike?
Cheers,
Tamar

[…] What I’ve found interesting in google analytics of one of mine 30DC tumblr pages was that someone used allinurl:tumblr as a search in google to get to my page. What does this mean? It means that someone listed all 511,000 indexed pages that has word ‘tumblr’ in its url. If this was another moment in time I’d say fine, somebody likes tumblr people perhaps, and went through all tumblr blogs this way, but right now it seems that someone is fishing on fresh key phrase ideas. Woohoo! Good for him! I hate to see somebody doing this, but I think that Ed & Co should have provided 30DC contestants with alternative web2.0 hosting platforms/blogs. I’m a newby to all things that compute. I too lost out to tumblr. (note small “t”) For me big time devistation, and the last few days looking at my links to find my blog copy a waste of time, as tumblr did those as well.
Well I must move on.
Nice work Mike.
