Tip #10 - One Email - Many Tumblr’s

By Mike Mindel | August 17, 2007

Update

Tumblr is currently suspending and banning blogs for unknown reasons. We suggest you use an alternative content platform.

See this post Tip#12 - It’s the Process not the Platform for more details.

Tumblr is nice, simple, easy to use blog with one big problem.

Each Tumblr Blog Needs a Unique Email Address

This is part of the Tumblr sign up page

Every time you set up a new Tumblr blog you need a unique email address.

You can’t set up two blogs on the same email address.

This a clearly a real pain if you want to set up multiple Tumblr blogs!

The Solution

Use “plus” (+) addressing which GMail supports.

E.g. if you want to create a blog for ’scottish castles’ but you want to use the same unusualproperties@gmail.com email address then type this

That’s unusualproperties+scottishcastles@gmail.com. So the extra +scottishcastles was inserted after unusualproperties and before the @gmail.com.

When an email is sent to unusualproperties+scottishcastles@gmail.com it will still reach you at unusualproperties@gmail.com.

This means you can set up a new Tumblr blog for any number of niche keywords, each pointing to the same email address.

e.g.

Note: ‘unusual properties’ is my umbrella phrase which leads to my GMail account unusualproperties@gmail.com. See Set Up a Separate GMail Account for more details.

In future, ‘hauntedmansions’, ‘lighthouses-by-the-sea’ will be related niche keywords that will also send traffic to my unusual properties page(s).

More on that later.

Nifty, huh?

Hi Mike, thanks for the mention. One thing that I did forget to add in the forum post is that not all sites will accept the + addressing idea. I believe that Netscape might be one, and the last time I checked, Yahoo email accounts didn’t support it at all, ie: mrcool+whatever@yahoo.com wouldn’t work. This may have changed, as it has been a while since I checked, but do be advised.

    Sorry about the oversight.

    Cheers, Marc

Good catch! I stumbled on to Marc Forum content and I started using this technique which you are good at writing up.
I still had a problem with the filter not sorting to the proper label.

I have multiple google accounts and my PC hates it. I also have an adsense account with a totally different password (for obvious reasons) and this makes life very difficult.

Google seems to want you to only have one account - which up to now I have used for trash mails.
